Alprazolam

Why has my veterinarian prescribed this medicine?

Alprazolam may be used to prevent unwanted behaviors in dogs and cats. This includes anxious, aggressive dogs or those demonstrating panic reactions.

What do I do if I miss giving a dose?

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

What are the potential side effects?

"A rare side effect in dogs is excitement... Cats may become irritable, show increased affection, or become depressed."

 

Are there any possible drug interactions?

"If your pet needs to take antacids, administer them at least 2 hours before or after alprazolam."

Quite often, your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and sometimes a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
